In keeping with these lean times, L'Impero in Tudor City, across from the United Nations, has morphed into the more egalitarian Convivio, with new decor, a new chef, and lower prices. Chef Michael White's enormous menu travels through southern Italy, beginning with snacks called sfizi—marinated green Castelvetrano olives, luscious burrata cheese topped with basil—followed by a dozen antipasti. But leave room for pasta; it's the high point of the meal, especially the Sicilian linguine with sardines and fennel and the guanciale-stuffed tortelli in a wonderfully rich cacio e pepe sauce.
Tip: The $59 four-course prix fixe is a steal (entrées, $19–$36).
