Hot List 2009

Gloutonnerie, Mexico City

142 Campos Elíseos

Tel: 52-55-5250-0981

This ritzy Polanco restaurant is named after a glouton, a type of sandwich invented by Marco Cooley for well-to-do chilangos (Mexico City residents) on the run. Cooley began with a small spot on the trendy Campos Elíseos but quickly had to expand to a three-story restaurant several doors down. The downstairs bar/bistro has an assortment of overstuffed gloutones and light dishes. Upstairs, the main dining area has a glass wall facing the street and swanky black-and-white decor. Young chefs Luis Garayoa and Sabrina Meyer serve French-leaning dishes like butterflied sardines on a pile of greens and steamed mussels in a light buttery broth, plus a stellar linguine packed with shrimp and langoustines. Skip the meager dessert options in favor of a nice bottle from the generous wine list.
Tip: On weekends, a DJ spins for diners while a jazz/funk ensemble plays at the rooftop terrace bar (entrées, $11–$19).
