Hot List 2009

Kogi BBQ, Los Angeles, California

Forget telephones or even Web sites: The way to find L.A.'s hottest new restaurant is via Twitter, the digital social networking service. Through frequent tweets (posts that are visible to anyone), Kogi keeps patrons updated on the locations of its two food trucks, both serving Korean barbecue on corn tortillas. Lines tend to get very long, but no one seems to mind—queue members just make friends. Chef Roy Choi, an alum of Manhattan's Le Bernardin and L.A.'s Beverly Hilton, has a simple menu of Korean short ribs, spicy pork or chicken, and tofu—all served on corn tortillas and topped with soy—and scallion-laced cabbage. Kogi is the perfect meal for our times: cheap, savory, and organic—with a side of community.
Tip: Specials like the kimchi quesadilla with sour cream on the side go fast, so line up early (tacos, $2).
