Chef Jerry Traunfeld spent 17 years at The Herbfarm, acelebrated Slow Food bedrock on a bucolic estate outside Seattle. So it was news when this award-winning chef left to open his casual Poppy on a gritty patch of Capitol Hill. Here, Traunfeld takes the Indian tradition of thali, a selection of tiny dishes served on a tray, and gives it his own seasonal, Pacific Northwest spin. Each platter includes ten lilliputian creations, ranging from tandoor-roasted quail with pomegranate and walnut sauce to a shot glass of chestnut soup with hints of cardamom.
Tip: Inventive cocktails combine the likes of rye and rhubarb, or yellow chartreuse and satsuma oranges (entrées, $32).
