After seducing New York diners with his ultra-refined Italian cooking at L'Impero and Alto, chef Scott Conant has moved downtown and shifted gears. His cooking is no less accomplished (and the prices no less expensive), but the mood is lighter and less formal. Pastas soar, especially his much-celebrated spaghetti pomodoro, while spiced duck breast is accompanied by preserved orange and root vegetables and fritto misto is astonishingly light.
Tip: End with the refreshing coconut panna cotta (entrées, $22$38).
