Acapulco + Zihuatanejo hotels

Hotels in Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa, and the surrounding region come in every size and shape imaginable. Hotels in Acapulco itself are spread all over Acapulco Bay. In Acapulco Viejo, on the west end of the bay, you'll find several '50s-era hotels with moderate rates and an air of faded glamour. Grupo Habita, creators of Mexico City's chic Condesa D.F., is renovating the venerable Boca Chica hotel in this neighborhood (slated to open in late 2009). At the center of the bay, the 1970s-style Costera is packed with chain hotels but also some great restaurants and bars. Restored and still grand resorts from the 1960s such as Las Brisas dot the hills above the west side of the bay. A hop further down the coast, the Acapulco Diamante area is where new resorts like another Grupo Habita hotel and the Banyan Tree are slated to open.

About 150 miles up the coast from Acapulco are Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Master-planned Ixtapa is quieter and more orderly than Acapulco, with brand-name hotels and all-inclusive resorts lining Playa Palmar. Zihuatanejo has the character and charm of an overgrown fishing village, with small exclusive boutique hotels like La Casa Que Canta and the Tides Zihuatanejo that'll make you feel like a celebrity—or put you within spotting distance of one.
