Concierge.com's insider take:

What's old is new again. La Paix, as it's locally known, originally opened in 1957. In 2005, the landmark hotel reopened after a complete renovation—as in, they tore it down. Rebuilt in Khmer palace style, there's a large enclosed tropical garden and a swimming pool. Even the rooms are princely in size and come with every modern convenience. The modern spa focuses on total well-being and offers meditation and tai chi along with aromatherapy and facials. Meric, the in-house restaurant, serves both Khmer and Western fare.

From the readers of Condé Nast Traveler:
This contemporary Khmer/Art Deco hotel is "a chic refuge from the dust and clamor of Siem Reap." The modern design is "the perfect counterpoint to the magnificent, crumbling architecture" of Angkor Wat. Rooms have black, white, and silver palettes and terrazzo soaking tubs. Arts Lounge has "interesting art and huge lounge beds." "The exotic pool has lushly landscaped little islands in it."

From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
Architecturally inspired by the surrounding 1960s gems that survived the Khmer Rouge regime, the 107-room Hôtel de la Paix encourages its guests to connect with the community through activities such as visiting a local orphanage. The hotel, however, is no NGO. Beds are cradle-soft, the spa overlooks a water garden, and the in-house Arts Lounge is generating buzz for its live performances and exhibitions. The restaurant Meric's two chefs—a New Zealander and a Frenchman who leads morning market tours for his Khmer menu—are committed to training underprivileged Cambodian youth; their star students chop and serve.—2006 Hot List
