We spent 4 nights on Heron Island, located on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef about 40 miles offshore from Gladstone. World-class snorkeling - Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We snorkeled from the beach every day. Usually jumped in by the dock & followed the sea wall or the channel out to the wreck a few hundred feet offshore. This is a "fish snorkel," especially around the wreck and along the channel, although the coral would be classified as exceptional anywhere else! Saw a shark in a cave almost every swim, & occasionally saw them flash by on the far side of the channel. Memorable sightings of rays, multiple schools of fish, & especially a 6" baby blue fish that inhabited the coral "flats." Boat snorkels take you to the edge of the reef where there is endless coral of every shape & color. Overwhelming !!!!! Fins are a must due to strong currents. Very expensive, simple food & lodging, but well worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Note: This is a bird sanctuary, so don't forget your earplugs. Also suggest you bring along a bottle of your favorite liquor - there's only one bar & absolutely nothing else to do but read after dark. report a problem
