Best advice I ever got was to learn a few phrases of where I am--especially which suggest that I do not understand, but am trying to learn--take out my pocket dictionary to show that I am willing to try to learn their language--and go from there. In over 40 years of travelling--I have never had a bad experience--as long as I show and make the initial effort report a problem
