Few nations the size of the Bahamas offer visitors such a wide range of lodgings—everything from bare-bones fishing camps, cozy B&Bs, and eco-resorts to luxurious hotels, world-class megaresorts, and private islands. Problem is, the accommodations are scattered over scores of islands, so you have to be more careful than usual in choosing your hotel. If you don't like your first choice, you can't just hop into your car and drive around until you find something better. The next flight may be two days away. The far-flung geography also means a lack of competition and higher prices: Expect to pay upward of $250 a night unless you're checking into a basic guesthouse or a large chain hotel.
