Shopping is far from the leading sport in Los Cabos, but there are some exceptional art, folk art, and interior design galleries that will tempt you to pull out your plastic. Several artists have opened galleries in San José del Cabo, and you can explore them on Thursday evening art walks (November through May). Exceptional galleries include the airy tri-level Galería de Ida Victoria and the multi-roomed Galería Corsica, both displaying original works by Mexican and international artists. Galería Veryka displays collector-quality folk art from Oaxaca, Puebla, and Chiapas. In Cabo San Lucas, Galería de Kaki Bassi features stylistic renditions of Baja's cave paintings. Todos Santos also has a lively art scene, with several galleries in historic adobe homes around the plaza.
Locals and visitors cool off amid air-conditioned marble and glass at Cabo San Lucas's Puerto Paraíso. The American-style mall—think movie theaters, Häagen-Dazs, a Ruth's Chris steakhouse, and dozens of sportswear and trinket shops—provides ample distraction though few treasures. The massive mall dominates the San Lucas harbor and waterfront malecón and provides a cool escape from the sun. Vendors carry piles of straw hats and baskets, pareos, and serapes along Playa Médano and other beaches and display similar wares at the Mercado de Artesanía at the San Lucas Marina.
