Concierge.com's insider take:
Situated in the town of Sóller, L'Avenida is an elegant recent addition (March 2007) to the Mallorca scene. This eight-room hotel is located within the imposing walls of a century-old mansion house, but the look is very modern and chic, with judicious use of cool wallpapers, funky four-poster beds, animal prints, and modern tiling in the bathrooms. The best rooms have views over the inner courtyard and swimming pool, and balconies framed by pillars and gauzy drapes. All have free Wi-Fi access (available throughout the hotel and garden), DVD players, 28-inch plasma TVs, and music systems. The toiletries are blended in-house using herbs from the Tramuntana mountains and Mediterranean minerals. A hearty breakfast buffet is served, as well as cocktails around the gazebo-style swimming pool. There's also a smart, modern bistro serving inventive Mediterranean fare (warm goat-cheese salad with caramelized walnuts and cinnamon pears). L'Avenida also plans to open a spa in March 2008.
Closed November through February.
From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
Occupying one of the elegant mansions built along Sóller's pretty plane tree–shaded Gran Via by citrus tycoons in the late nineteenth century, the eight-room L'Avenida has the vibe of a swanky house party. The central white-marble staircase and mahogany railing are part of the original Art Nouveau design by Joan Rubio, a student of Gaudí, as are the pine doors and certain other decorative flourishes. And while new British owners Tania and Paul Slijper have given this place an edgy Rat Pack look—with black chandeliers, tufted leather headboards, dark oak parquet, contemporary art, and bold lighting fixtures—L'Avenida has a palpable old-world charm. Rooms are exceptionally spacious, with high ceilings and large windows; most still have the original moldings. Comforts include Egyptian cotton sheets, CD/DVD players, and AC, and in-room spa treatments are available. The pool in the garden is lined with sun loungers upholstered in fuchsia canvas. With buckets of style and a friendly staff, L'Avenida makes Sóller very much part of the new generation of design hotels.2008 Hot List
