Concierge.com's insider take:
Located in the old fishing quarter of Palma—and now firmly established as one of the city's hottest barrios—the Portixol was instrumental in putting the area on the map when it was opened in 1999 by Swedish entrepreneurs. The sleekly minimalist 26 rooms, with Scandinavian design evident everywhere—blond wood floors, glass tiles in the bathroom, a simple palette of white with a splash of cornflower blue—make good use of the light that streams through every window. It also has some fun touches, like binoculars for watching the horizon. We like the spacious Mediterranean View rooms, with terraces facing south to the coastline. The lounge area and bar buzz with the gossip of fashionable long-weekenders from Scandinavia, Germany, and Britain. It also has a large pool area, a good restaurant serving modern Mediterranean dishes (baked cod with potato, sobrasada, and honey mash), and a spa with a wide range of treatments. The new Port House opened at the start of June 2007, offering two bedrooms, a lounge, and a kitchen for those looking for more freedom and privacy.
