With just five suites on the edge of the whitewashed village of San Juan, in the island's tranquil northeast, the Giri affords guests the lavish Ibiza villa experience without the need for a second mortgage. Despite its Spanish pedigree (it occupies a 150-year-old finca), the hotel has a Balinese look. Grounds are dotted with palms and gazebos, while inside, texture is a major design feature: The Almendra suite, for example, has driftwood walls, an antique carved wood door in the lounge, and a bathroom with stone basins, slate tiles, and a pebble-floor shower. The villa vibe extends to meals—you decide where and when you wish to eat: Share the inlaid-mother-of-pearl table in the casual dining room with young European honeymooners and music-industry Americans; snag a table by the 50-foot pool; or find a nook in the garden. Food quality is a bit uneven, ranging from an excellent gazpacho to a prawn cocktail that's too heavy on the mayo. Despite the small number of guests, the staff can seem a little harassed. Still, the artsy decor, a concierge who can arrange everything from Pilates instruction to private flights, and the spa make this a great—and refreshingly affordable—choice for a restful stay far from the megaclub mayhem. —2011 Hot List
