Ibiza + Mallorca nightlife
When it comes to nightlife in the Balearics, most people think immediately of the hedonistic party scene in Ibiza, and rightly so. The island remains the HQ of some of the world's biggest clubs—Space, Pacha, and El Divino among them. Inevitably, then, Ibiza has had a bad rap in the past, when the club scene has been a detriment to the island as a whole, but the past few years have seen it go considerably upmarket, attracting the European glitterati and opening a more civilized kind of night spot in the form of innumerable chill-out lounges and cool beach bars. Note that the Ibiza party season lasts a scant four months. Opening parties generally kick off the first week of June, and closing parties wind down during the last week of September (www.ibiza-spotlight.com has a useful schedule of events).
Mallorca too sees its fair share of nighttime action, attracting a less scene-y crowd to no-less-glamorous venues. Palma, of course, is the hub, offering visitors a wide range of bars and clubs, but to party with the trendsetters, you need to head out along the bay to the various smooth, sophisticated beach spots that have taken up residence in recent years.
Menorca is fairly un-happening when it comes to destination clubbing, though both Maó and Ciutadella have their fair share of bars. Formentera, however, is becoming something of a secret hot spot for summer beach parties. Put your ear to the ground when you get there.
