One of Barcelona's original new-wave restaurants, opened in 2000 in El Born, Abac has taken on the quiet glow of a local classic, and despite whispers to the contrary, remains one of the city's best bets. The crowd is a little more conservative than that at Comerç 24; they're playing it safe by going for something tried and true. The 1990s decor with honey-colored walls, dark cherry floors, and red chairs could use an update, but chef Xavier Pellicer follows prime produce through the seasons to constantly reinvent his ten-course tasting menu. Flash-seared tuna melts into crunchy, cumin-scented artichoke chips; crisp caramelized skin envelops fork-tender suckling pig; a deconstructed seafood bouillabaisse is composed of a mousse and broth; and Spain is well-represented on the cheese trolley.
Closed for lunch Sundays, Mondays, and Fridays.
