I must admit, I am long overdue on this review but I completely understand how Conde Nast has voted Machaca Hill as a Hot List 2010 hotel. I stayed with my girlfriend in January 2010 (before the recent press) and cannot say enough about the place. Between the service, excursions, the food, the spa, the location, there is nothing better in the country. Upon arrival a guide meets you at the airport that is your personal guide for the trip. Whether you want to snorkel the Caribbean, hike in the rain forest searching for jaguars, swim in caves, cliff jump, learn to make chocolate Mayan style, bike, fish, or indulge in spa treatments, your personal guide will assist you in making your stay perfect. (By the way I did all of these, and the spa is insane and COMPLETELY private!) The service we received from our hosts, Brian and Jane, and the INCREDIBLE food from Chef Ken is surely unmatched elsewhere. Brian and Jane take serious pride in running the lodge and it shows. Since my stay, I've read various reviews about how this is the best food in Belize, and I believe it. I seriously did not want to leave. Ken your afternoon tea treats are still the single best afternoon snacks I've ever had. The attention to detail from the staff is incredible as well and they will stop at nothing to ensure a good time is had. The Machaca experience is truly a high end, secluded, private affair which I didn't entirely realize until we arrived. After all there's only twelve 900 sq ft (or so) separate units on 11,000 acres. If you can't relax here you might as well stop trying. If you are looking for a different more exciting trip stop following the crowds and seriously check this place out. I'm going back - no question about it.
