We stayed at the Crystal Palace which offered a low key, comfortable evironment with individual cabins overlooking the mountains...beautiful place run by a local family within their farm....many of the current excavations are far back into the mountains and your guides can take you there...wonderful place to hike the mountains-see birds, wild cats and reptiles as well as a beautiful startlight skies...don't forget to find the beaches as well....we went South to Placencia and found Jeps a fantastic guide and sailor who took us to a deserted island, speared fish and gathered conch and started a fire with two sticks over an open pit - brought vegetables from his garden, sun tea and homemade desert - showed us where to snorkle and then sailed the islands with a short tour - stayed in a house on the beach (the water lapped the foundation) and walked downtown - no real road -across the soccer field to a restaurant in a house for the best fish dinner ever- drank donkey milk for breakfast and saw ruins over 3000 years old - caves with pottery and skeletons (yes they were real) and met a real life pirate who was drinking with a well known rock star (he would kill us if we gave away his secret hideaway) - all the best and everyone we met was glad to see us - very little in the way of communication(no news updates for 10 days - yea!) except Internet cafes - made us almost sad to see them but glad to know everthing was fine at home - roadside cafes allows us to pick our food - they were walking around the tables until selected - not surprisingly my meal was vegetarian that day - great place for kids and for learning and most of all for seeing what is important - one caveat - only one hospital in the country and very little medical care available - we didn't need it but would have hated to have an accident - ruins are steep and often wet so be careful - it's not Disney.... Also took a quick trip to Guatamalea - very different and a little scary - lots of 16 yr old soldiers with loaded rifles - they are serious about aritfact theives - don't pick anything up that is on the ground - no matter how small - report a problem
