Concierge.com's insider take:
The new movement affectionately dubbed "Kraut Art" is gaining an international reputation, partly driven by a flourishing Berlin gallery scene. Some art publications have even suggested that the now infamous "young British artists" (YBAs) are being pushed aside by "young German artists" (YGAs). Art world hype? Judge for yourself by touring some of the Mitte district's top galleries, many located on Linienstrasse, Auguststrasse, and farther south toward Kreuzberg on Zimmerstrasse. The array includes Contemporary Fine Arts (21 Sophienstrasse; 49-30-288-7870; www.cfa-berlin.com), Eigen + Art (26 Auguststrasse; 49-30-280-6605; www.eigen-art.com), Arndt & Partner (90-91 Zimmerstrasse; 49-30-280-8123; www.arndt-partner.de), and Barbara Weiss (88-91 Zimmerstrasse; 49-30-262-4284; www.galeriebarbaraweiss.de). Be on the lookout for artists such as Jonathan Meese, Tatjana Doll, and Tim Eitel. There's also a slew of new galleries on Brunnenstrasse, the cutting-edge answer to the success of earlier Mitte galleries. Try Amerika, with its representation of hot young Leipzig artists (Brunnenstrasse 7; 49-30-4050-4953; www.amerika-berlin.de), right next to Curators Without Borders (Brunnenstrasse 5; 49-30-4050-05-48; www.curatorswithoutborders.com) and Goff + Rosenthal, the branch of a Manhattan gallery (Brunnenstrasse 3; 49-30-4373-5083). Charlottenburg also has many galleries, some of which predate the destruction of the Berlin Wall; one that has consistently good exhibits is the Galerie Michael Schultz (34 Mommsenstrasse; 49-30-319-9130; www.galerie-schultz.de).
