In an island awash in renovations, Horizons & Cottages has dared to remain the same. That's not to say the hotel hasn't gone though a number of reincarnations since it opened in 1926, including a stint as a Relais & Châteaux property in the 1990s. Now it is calling itself a bed-and-breakfast, a somewhat misleading term: Essentially, Horizons has all the physical facilities of a large, traditional resort, such as the terrace pool and golf course (use is free of charge), but it no longer provides the white-glove services it once did—room service, bellhops, concierge. As per the classic island hotel arrangement, the colonial, slightly crumbling mansion is surrounded by smaller stone cottages. Each of the 27 guest rooms has been individually decorated as if it were a private summerhouse—lots of white wicker, mint-green dotted Swiss drapes, canopy beds, plus real fireplaces so you can snuggle up with a dusty old volume and a gin and tonic on a chilly day. There's also a superbly romantic restaurant (managed by a separate company) called Splendido. But the real bonus is a heady dose of good old-fashioned personality and atmosphere, from the pet rooster who squawks about in the prize azaleas to the sterling-silver toast holders at breakfast. Our one caveat: There is no beach, so guests have to walk downhill to a neighboring property.
