The stay from Hell at Villa Soro

After taking some very much needed time off, my husband and I decided to take a romantic getaway to the Basque region which is where my husband’s ancestry is from. After eight hours of international air travel and then 5 hours of driving from Madrid to San Sebastian, we were not only tired and jet lagged, we were also famished. Upon arriving to Villa Soro, we were dismayed to find out that no one was working other than a young lady at the reception desk. It was 10 pm. We had to park our own car, bus our own luggage up several flights of stairs in the rain AND while being pregnant I might add. We were also disappointed to hear that we would not be able to have dinner either since there was no room service available. Lovely, right? To add insult to injury, we had a good laugh in the morning when we found out that the “king” size bed was really two twin mattresses placed side-by-side and then strapped together. My husband and I went to curl up in bed and fell in between the crease of the two beds! Very romantic room indeed! The continental breakfast was simple and ordinary. Nothing to write home about. The room had no view and the hotel was not centrally located to all the best that San Sebastian has to offer. Therefore, I would be cautious to recommend this hotel to anyone. On our next trip to San Sebastian, we will undoubtedly look into staying at the Hotel Londres or Hotel Maria Cristina.
