Newbury Street, a narrow one-way road beginning at the Public Garden, is synonymous with Boston shopping. While a few national chains (Valentino, Cartier, H&M, American Eagle) have moved in, many of Newbury's 150-plus clothing boutiques, art galleries, day spas, restaurants, and cafés remain independently owned. On nearby Charles Street, a historic redbrick lane, hip designer boutiques have joined sophisticated antique shops at the base of swanky Beacon Hill. And what Newbury is to women's fashion and Charles is to antiques, the South End has become to home decor and clothing shops for men.
