British Virgin Islands shopping
There's limited shopping in the BVI, and nothing like the herd-and-horde cruise-ship scene of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas or Philipsburg on Sint Maarten. An outpost of the ubiquitous Colombian Emeralds and a purpose-built West Indian–style market called Crafts Alive lie near the port, but they offer few original products. All's not lost for souvenir hunters, though, with a brace of distinctive stores on Tortola. Sunny Caribbee spice shop and art gallery in Road Town on Tortola is the place for locally made pepper sauces, spices, West Indian love potions, and hangover cures. BVI-born artist Aragorn is the main creative force behind the culture colony growing up on Beef Island's Trellis Bay (within walking distance to the airport). His metalwork, including the "fireball" sculptures used during the bay's full-moon parties, occupy space in his store alongside pottery and weavings by indigenous Carib artists.
