Buenos Aires shopping
Shopping in Buenos Aires remains a good bet despite the wildly oscillating Argentine economy. Although the bargain-basement prices are rapidly disappearing, the city remains a great place to score funky designer items, hand-crafted jewelry, and products made from leather, silver, and wood. Leading stores offer international shipping, while several outlets collate objects from dozens of individual designers, offering everything from candlesticks and cowhide sofas to glass-and-ceramic vases and mirrors framed in untanned leather.
The old-world-elegant Recoleta neighborhood has the big-name international labels. But to get a real taste of Argentine fashion, head to Palermo Viejo for one-off, made-to-measure items and boutiques that capture the subtle mix of Parisian chic and rocker edge that defines Buenos Aires style. Good bargains can still be found for hand-made polo boots, leather-and-goatskin tango shoes, and fine furniture, in addition to 20th-century home accessories, particularly from the Art Deco period. A plethora of stores offer ponchos, saddle wear, and maté gourds; others sell indigenous design and home furnishing from Argentina's interior; some go one step further, using traditional materials and forms to more modern ends. One word of warning: After-sales service does not exist in Argentina, so make doubly certain you're happy with workmanship, size, and color before paying.
