Cairo restaurants

Not even the Arabian Nights storytellers could muster much enthusiasm for Cairo's food, which lacks the variety, complexity, and refinement of the court cuisine of Morocco and Tunisia, but there are satisfying meals to be had here, for all budgets. While grand hotels put the emphasis on Western and Asian cuisine, the city's trendiest restaurants focus on the region's culinary heritage. Though Egypt is a largely Muslim country, it has always enjoyed a reputation for worldly pleasures, and a growing number of local beers and wines are on offer. (Still, during Ramadan your waiter may put an unopened can of non-alcoholic beer next to your drink—whatever it may be—as a mark of piety.)
