Concierge.com's insider take:

The Fairmont may have come first, but it's no shock that its main luxury rival is the Four Seasons, which opened to rave reviews in 2005. Four Seasons veterans will recognize the zealous service, but newcomers to the chain who are here just for the snow might be taken aback. (Use your "Privacy Please" door hanger if you don't want staffers checking on your well-being every two hours.) The hotel has 273 rooms, all with fireplaces and balconies—and even the smallest feels pretty darn big at more than 500 square feet. Guests can reach either mountain via shuttle bus, but it's a mere four-minute walk to Blackcomb's base, where the hotel posts a top-flight ski concierge to store your equipment and lend advice on the best runs. When the ski day is done, head to Fifty Two 80 Bistro, where chef Scott Dolbee celebrates his Californian roots with dishes based around locally sourced ingredients. His seared sablefish, with open-faced oxtail ravioli, butternut squash, and sorrel julienne, is a novel treat.

From the readers of Condé Nast Traveler:
Nestled in a "stunning position" below Blackcomb Mountain, this Arts-and-Crafts resort offers a ski concierge service that cleans your equipment each day. Rooms have slate-tiled bathrooms, "wonderful gas fireplaces," and balconies. Indulge in Canadian steaks at Sidecut, with a choice of six rubs. Staff "made me feel at home the second I stepped out of my car."

From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
Four Seasons opened its second North American ski resort at a quiet remove from the central chairlift and frat-party hubbub in Village Square. A ski concierge does everything but unfurl a magic carpet to get you to the slopes, but the property delivers more than downhill thrills. The butter-yellow chalet-style complex has 273 rooms, suites, and town houses, all of which have fireplaces and balconies that add yet more space to the rooms' already Canada-sized dimensions (the smallest is 520 square feet). Even the corridors seem wide enough for migrations of local moose and elk. Chef Jason McLeod—who earned his stripes, if not a Purple Heart, under London celebrity chef and enfant terrible Marco Pierre White—has returned to his native British Columbia to helm the hotel's Fifty-Two 80 Bistro, named for the Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort's mile-long vertical drop, the continent's longest. The full-service spa occupies the entire ground floor of one wing.—2005 Hot List
