Hôtel Le Priori, Québec City, Québec $$$$
Concierge.com's insider take:
Be glad that Le Priori has escaped the attention of most travelers. With 26 rooms, it's intimate yet never hovering-over-your-every-move so. And it shares the same prime Old Port location as better-known (and more expensive) top-tier hotels like Auberge Saint Antoine and Hôtel Dominion. Once a private residence, the tall, narrow building sits on a cobblestone street, and a designer's touches are evident throughout: Many walls are exposed slate or brick, attractive wall sconces shed offset light, and furniture is modern but comfy. Even the least expensive rooms upstairs have duvet-covered queen beds, lounging chairs, and sinks (and sometimes full-sized tubs) in the bedrooms themselves. The most winning are the six suites in a building out back, separated by a small courtyard. Each has its own furniture and color scheme and is rife with personality and warmth (a good thing in the region's not-so-kind winters). The second-floor NewTone suite, for instance, has massive windows along a beautiful slate wall, a working fireplace with a bearskin laid out in front of it, a glass-walled bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen, and an expansive bathroom that includes a large sunken bathtub surrounded by candles.
