Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Québec City, Québec $$$$
Concierge.com's insider take:
All around Canada, the Fairmont chain owns many of the most prominent properties, and they're often spectacularly sited. Le Château Frontenac is no exception. A former fort used to defend the city (it looks like a cross between a medieval castle and an 18th-century château), it straddles the topmost part of old town like the lord of the province. Like many of its brethren, it has a huge lobby and a few too many rooms (618 in this case). Though staff are efficient and courteous, the size means that the efficient service can also feel a tad impersonal, and the number of conventioneers can dilute the experience. Also be specific about which room you're booking: Some are much smaller than others, and they don't all have river views. A benefit of its size is the expansive fitness center with indoor pool and the bevy of restaurant options, including Restaurant Le Champlain (serving upscale French food) and more informal La Café Terrasse and Le Bistro. Overall, it's a good place to stay, with amazing views and a sense of history. To avoid the institutional feel, opt for one of the new 46 Gold Level rooms: Located on the main tower's upper floors, they have their own concierge and dedicated check-in area.
