Concierge.com's insider take:

Thompson hotels have a well-deserved reputation for doing double duty as hip places to stay and to play. So, it's no surprise that Thompson Toronto—the hotel chain's first foray outside the United States—quickly became Toronto's hottest hangout after its 2010 opening in the city's already trendy Central King West Village neighborhood. The big draws are the hotel's lobby bar, the rooftop pool and lounge (hotel guests only, or by invitation), the subterranean Club 1812 (open Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays), and the glam outpost of Scott Conant's Scarpetta. The 102 rooms are generically tasteful, with a neutral palette, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a wall of handsome dark-wood cabinets to match the dark-wood floors. There are a few caveats: Only the 18 suites have a bathtub. And light sleepers will want to avoid street-facing rooms, though the 24-hour diner and fitness studio offer refuge if you do wake up.—Raphael Kadushin

From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
Like the small skating rink in its courtyard, the Thompson is a mix of angles and icy lines, built for fun. Not so much as a speck of color- disturbs the chi of white walls, polished-wood closets, and heated marble bathroom floors (a welcome source of warmth in such a cool space) in the 102 rooms. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook downtown's skyscrapers and the espresso bar-sprouting West End. Though cheerful staff effortlessly attend to guests, the Thompson is first and foremost a nightlife playground. Moguls occupy the dimly lit banquettes at Scarpetta, where the formal service—an army of waiters, captains, and sommeliers—doesn't detract from chef Scott Conant's pleasurably simple Italian cooking. There's also Wabora, a maki and mayo spot, and The Counter, a 24-hour Art Deco-style diner. The lobby bar and basement nightclub, 1812, draw crowds on weekends, but hotel guests and condo owners, select locals, and occasional celebs escape to the rooftop lounge for its infinity pool. —2011 Hot List

Which room to book: Northwest-facing rooms on upper floors have great city views—Nos. 713, 813, and 913 are high enough to be unobstructed by other buildings.
