Alpine settings don't get more awesome than this: The Chateau Lake Louise is perched on the banks of aquamarine Lake Louise, with dramatic Victoria Glacier just off the distance. The actual structure is nowhere near as dramatic as the Fairmont Banff Springs, and there is always a distracting throng of tourists walking around the lake path. Nonetheless, when everyone else goes elsewhere for the evening, you'll still have that view—and it's also ideal for forays into the surrounding mountains. Though the lobby is elegant, decorated with an antique chandelier, historic photographs, and portraits of British royalty, the staff won't purse their lips if your muddy boots drip onto the carpet. Open since 1892, the hotel's 552 guest rooms have been built or renovated over the last five years. Need lots of space? Avoid the standard rooms in the original 19th-century building, which are sized according to European standards of the time. Instead, reserve a suite in the new Mountain Temple wing or the exclusive Gold floor (the 7th), which offers appetizers, private check-in, and a devoted concierge. Its Gold Lounge is decorated with museum paintings and heritage artwork, and serves a deluxe breakfast, too.
