Opened in 1942 as a lodge for mountaineers, the Post sits on a bucolic parcel of the valley floor, next to a stream. It's evolved into a warm, luxury alpine chalet under the 28-year ownership of Swiss brothers George and André Schwarz, who for many years served as Lake Louise's ski school director. The 103 rooms have lots of dark wood and glass doors that open to the outdoors, allowing in loads of light. A distinction is made between "standard side" rooms—with views to the parking lot—and "preferred side" that open onto a slice of woods. The suites and private cabins have stone-ringed fireplaces, refrigerators, and Jacuzzi tubs. Despite the sophistication of the Relais & Châteaux restaurant and the Temple Mountain Spa, the Post has never lost its down-home appeal. Guests sometimes coax André to ski with them—or at the least, to share a drink in the cozy Post bar, where light comes from painted branches strung with Christmas lights.
