There's a lot of country out here: Banff National Park alone encompasses 2,500 square miles. Many of the best options for upscale accommodations are within the park itself: The towns of Banff and Lake Louise both have famous Fairmont properties. For more intimate accommodations in the area, take a look at Bed & Breakfast on Mountain Lane, known for its stellar breakfasts (104 Mountain Ln., Banff; 403-762-2009; www.standish-banff.com), and Buffalo Mountain Lodge (700 Tunnel Mountain Rd., Banff; 403-762-2400; www.crmr.com), which has large in-room fireplaces lined with river rock and a fine-dining restaurant. Jasper National Park, 165 miles to the north of Banff, has somewhat more limited accommodations, though of course it's got a Fairmont of its own, too. Otherwise, in both parks, you can camp at designated trail sites (Banff Parks: 403-762-1556; Jasper Parks: 780-852-6162).
