Cancún hotels
Once a glamorous getaway for the jet set, Cancún has changed over the past couple of decades. A Spring Break vibe prevailed for years, but a more sophisticated scene is gradually emerging, thanks to the opening of stylish resorts like the ME and Aqua Cancún. Both are located in the ritziest part of the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone), near the Ritz-Carlton and Le Méridien hotels and several of the zone's best restaurants. North of this area is Punta Cancún, home to several dance clubs, all-inclusive hotels, a mall, and the convention center. This area is party central, where young revelers tour the club scene into the wee hours. Beaches are skimpy south of the point, but lavish pool areas provide ample space for water play. Between here and downtown, several large all-inclusive properties and a few moderately priced hotels face Isla Mujeres, which protects the sand from erosion. The water is usually calm and clear, though sea grass gets thick in summer. The northern end of the Hotel Zone is best for those seeking seclusion; shops and restaurants are scarce here, outside of the hotels, and the water tends to have a bit more surf. Budget travelers are best off in downtown Cancún, where inexpensive hotels are clustered near the bus station.
