Chiang Mai nightlife
Given the number of night markets and excellent restaurants, there's a lively after-dark scene in Chiang Mai, but this isn't Bangkok or, thankfully, Pattaya. Yes, there are a few clusters of love-for-sale saloons flanking the old city's eastern moat, but the scene is decidedly more low-key than Bangkok's naughty Patpong Road. European-style pubs can be found on Loikroh Street, east of the Night Bazaar, and Moonmuang Road, west of Thapae Gate. Thapae's also the place for a quick drink at a "van bar''—mini-buses that have been tricked out into four-wheeled, fully stocked pubs. Most bars and clubs are hopping by 10 p.m.; curfew is 1 a.m., with a few exceptions. It's common for Thai groups to simplify the beverage service by ordering a bottle of liquor (preferably Johnnie Walker) and mixers.
