Years in the making and set amid the tropical forests and bamboo groves of the Nankun Nature Reserve in Guangdong Province, Crosswaters Ecolodge is a study in stunning green design. The dramatic bamboo bridge at the entryway seems to belong on a Zhang Yimou movie set, and the restaurant and lounge feature bamboo flying buttresses. In the open-sided restaurant, you feel at one with the surroundings while dining on hearty local Hakka dishes, made with organic vegetables grown on-site. The 53 villas—some private—have recycled roof tiles, rammed-earth walls, small walled gardens evocative of old China, and plush interiors with poster beds. Only the TVs seem incongruous (shunning television is one green leap the resort didn't make). While there are some kinks—pedestrian spa treatments, most members of the staff's inability to communicate in English—these lapses are forgivable at a resort whose artistry is uplifting.—2009 Hot ListWhen to go: All year is good; weekdays are more tranquil.
