Monterosso is the best place to stay and I would recommend the Hotel Margherita. It was extermely clean well kept and modern and right on the main pedetrian street near the new parking garage (believe me, you do not want to be lugging your bags around). It was listed as a 3-star but I would give it 4. For shear authenticity to visit, Corniglia is my choice (probably because of its few residents, tourists and difficulty to get to--but a good workout on the steps up to it). As for Portofino, it is only worthy of a drive-by. Granted, it is a pretty location, but it is snobby, overpriced and a true hassle to get to by boat (crowds) or car (the road to get in and the parking, or lack thereof, when you get there.
