Costa Rica isn't about roughing it—unless that's your thing. There are plenty of high-end hotels with niceties like hot tubs, plunge pools, and terraces with expansive views. What you might not find at otherwise luxe lodgings are TVs, telephones, and Internet connections: The point here is getting unplugged. Following the government's introduction of the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program in the 1990s, which applies more stringent rules to any place touting itself as ecologically friendly, you can assume that a hotel's environmental credentials are true.
