Côte d'Azur hotels
The Côte d'Azur is famous for its seafront pleasure palaces. In Cannes, the Croisette is lined with properties like the Hôtel Martinez and the InterContinental Carlton. Nice's grandes dames, like Palais de la Méditerranée and Hôtel Negresco, are found along the Place Masséna and the Promenade des Anglais. The Lost Generation's Côte d'Azur, as depicted by F. Scott Fitzgerald in Tender is the Night, is still alive and well, too. Look no further than the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc on St.-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, with its legendary pool and all-out white-marble decadence. Be prepared, however, to spend well into the four figures by the time you're done with your stay—literary glamour doesn't come cheap.
Fortunately, cheap and chic are not mutually exclusive concepts: Hotels under $300 are plentiful on the French Riviera. The best of these are boutique hotels, located in renovated townhouses on the town's back streets—like the Renoir in Cannes and Le Grimaldi in Nice—and catering to youngish travelers. These hotels offer a restricted menu of services—no emergency dry cleaning or swimming pools—in exchange for well-designed rooms at reasonable prices. Outside of the big cities, there are cliff-side hideaways, like Le Cagnard in Cagnes-sur-Mer, that have romantic views and great restaurants.
