Côte d'Azur shopping
The Côte d'Azur's shopping scene lacks Paris's designer ateliers and Provence's authenticity and revolves mainly around conspicuous consumption at luxury boutiques. But there's another side: older establishments on back streets unaffected by seafront real-estate prices. As is true in most things, Cannes is flashier than Nice, with the usual suspects (Prada, Chanel, Dior, et al.) lined up on the Croisette, many in tentlike additions to the hotels, or on the Rue d'Antibes, a few streets in from the beach. Nice is more of a boutique-searcher's town, especially in Vieux Nice south of the Place Masséna. It's quite possible to wander for hours among the narrow, crowded streets, where kitschy postcard shops give way to more artisanal offerings. In the smaller towns, notable shops are rare; Èze and La Turbie offer more of interest than do their neighbors but little that's worth a special shopping expedition. Of course, there's always Monaco, which feels like an enormous stage-facade luxury emporium. Those in the market for a Ferrari or jewel-encrusted watch need look no further.
