I have been returning to Santorini (Thira) since my college days 20 yrs ago and have never tired of the beauty -- not only of the landscape, but of the people who make the island their home. Rent a car or scooter and explore the wine museum, the vineyards and galleries that are off the beaten track (Artspace combines gallery and winery!) and be sure not to miss Ancient Thira, which occupies a beautiful setting and offers many native species of plant life, including orchids. Wander the northeastern coast of the island, which seems strangely uninhabited, as compared to the west and south. And take the time to relax and enjoy a game of tavli (backgammon) at a local cafe -- the locals will savor the time spent with you, and you with them!
