Dominican Republic hotels
Hotels in the Dominican Republic have come a long way since the Funjet crowd began arriving en masse, and lodging options now encompass everything from restored B&Bs like Hotel Atarazana in Santo Domingo to ultraluxe boutique hotels on the still undeveloped Samaná Peninsula, such as Peninsula House. Punta Cana's 21-mile stretch of postcard-white sand is where you'll find many of the country's famed all-inclusive resorts. Most are undistinguished, with bland food, tacky architecture, and zero sense of place; more upscale and evolved examples worth recommending include Agua Resort & Spa, Sivory, and Tortuga Bay.
Hotels on the Dominican Republic's north coast include the elegant Casa Colonial in Puerto Plata; still more all-inclusives in the Playa Dorada complex; and an exploding number of independent, budget-friendly options, including Natura Cabañas, near the action-packed town of Cabarete. An ambitious roster of bold-faced hotel groups plan to break ground or open between now and 2011: Fairmont and Ritz Carlton in the Cap Cana development, Amanresorts in Playa Grande, and Four Seasons at Casa de Campo.
