From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:
The 30-room Hudson, created from a pair of handsome nineteenth-century sandstone houses just off Charlotte Square, offers an edgy dose of Manhattan-loft style. It's also a major new nightlife destination, with a groovy lounge bar in the basement and a popular bar with a stylish world-food menu—udon noodles, fajitas, burgers. Snug rooms have eucalyptus parquet floors, chocolate-brown leather armchairs, and suede shades on desk lamps. Every room also gets a contemporary painting by a local artist, and stone-gray-tiled baths come with tubs—rare at this price—heated towel racks, and Molton Brown toiletries. Room service, electric kettles with tea and coffee, and free Wi-Fi are welcome touches. The only thing that should change is the plastic orchids in red glass vases—be real or be gone.
2007 Hot ListWhen to go: Summer for the Edinburgh festival; fall for the gentle weather.
Which room to book: The quietest rooms overlook the back garden, including a standard double like No. 205.
