The Balmoral may be centrally located and it is the "grand dam" of Edinburgh hotels, but you are sacrificing comfort and, surprisingly, some level of service. In July, a pre-booked and requested noon check-in, was delayed and delayed until well after 4:00 pm (normal check in is 3:00). Staff expressed concern, but did little to resolve the situation. The "superior" room we were given was small, not all that nicely appointed, and had cold air constantly blowwing--and issue that took hours to resolve. Yes, it did have a view of the the Castle and the Scott Memorial, which we nice to look at and it did have a decent sized, updated bathroom. Over all it wasn't worth the price. And when I got home they had changed me for a mini bar item we never took. They did take it off the bill once I called them, but really. I had hoped for a trascendent hotel experience, instead it was frustrating, ordinary, and expensive.
