Edinburgh shopping
There was a time when Princes Street, which more or less divides the city into medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town, was Edinburgh's main shopping artery. These days the high street stores are of little interest to visitors. George Street, located just behind Princes Street, is where you'll find upmarket clothing boutiques (Cruise Clothes, Whistles, Jigsaw) and beauty shops (Penhaligon's, Jo Malone, Space NK). Multrees Walk, a tiny lane that runs alongside Harvey Nic's, is fast becoming a luxury enclave—Louis Vuitton, Emporio Armani, Mulberry, and Anne Fontaine have already set up shop. The High Street and Royal Mile offer mostly tartan tat, but a few gems selling beautiful woolens and other quality Scottish goods make it worth the trip. There are also interesting shops along Victoria Street and in the Grassmarket (don't miss Armstrongs, 83 The Grassmarket; 44-131-220-5557; www.armstrongsvintage.co.uk), a secondhand store famous for its fancy dresses. Stockbridge has more of the same, and there's another great vintage shop, Elaine's Vintage Clothes (55 St. Stephen St.; 44-131-225-5783), on St. Stephen Street.
