An Edinburgh institution much beloved of Morningside ladies (Edinburgh matriarchs), this department store was independently run by the same family until 2005, when it was bought by House of Fraser. Fans fear that there are changes on the cards, but for now it's still a shopper's paradise: an 1838 neo-Gothic structure with an ornately carved exterior, a three-story interior atrium, wood paneling, and more than 100 departments. The warren of rooms and halls—from the toy department in the basement to food hall on the second floor—is an ideal place to find traditional gifts, such as Edinburgh crystal, but the designer and beauty floors, while good, aren't in the same league as nearby Harvey Nichols.
