The Uprising's website features a photo of a galloping horse pulling a bikini-clad girl through the surf on a wakeboard (a.k.a. "horseboarding"). This is your first hint that this new resort is very much aimed at the young and young at heart. The 27-year-old half-French Fijian owner runs the hotel with his friends (the GM is all of 26), and tries to get unemployed youth in the area into training and mentoring programs on staff. But the kids are all right, so to speak, and this version of Fiji youth Uprising (get it?) is a surprisingly nice budget property with spacious freestanding beach bures. Expect charming touches like ceramic bowl sinks, modular wicker furniture, sexy outdoor showers, lots of soft lighting and sophisticated tan cotton sheets (too bad the beds dont have better quality mattresses). Uprising also has a large Fijian-style casual restaurant/bar with two open decks serving delicious, well-presented veggie, fish, and meat curries (and a live DJ on the weekends). It's worth visiting for the inexpensive food alone even if you are staying at another Coral Coast property. Theres a nice surf break and beach, and a whole menu of tempting activities including shark dives and Jet-Ski safaris. The horseboarding is a bit suspect (is this humane?), but fits into the resort's overall mantra of letting your hair down for a bit. There is also a flashpacker (Aussie term for more upscale backpackers) 24-bunk hostel on property, but not to worry, the high-spiritedness is contained in the public areas and won't affect you once you retreat to your private bure.
