Concierge.com's insider take:
Fiji is famous for its fertile and still pristine sea life, particularly its colorful array of corals. Almost any place you stay will be able to set you up with snorkeling equipment or recommend a reputable dive operator. But if this is the main attraction for you in Fiji, you should do your research carefully to chose between the dive spots in the Yasawa Islands, the Mamanuca Islands, the Lau group of islands, Lomaiviti Island, the main island of Viti Levu, the other main island of Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the new hot spot, Kadavu. Vanua Levu has better access to two major spots, Somosomo Strait north of Vanua Levu, between the island and Taveuni, and the Namena Marine Protected Area, a coral reef south of the island. You could easily do both in a weeks stay at The Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort. Not only is it the top-rated eco-resort in the world–it's so confident about the quality of surrounding marine areas that seafood for the restaurant is caught right offshore–but it also runs one of the best dive centers in Fiji, L'Adventure. The dive shop has a wide range of PADI certification courses, an on-staff marine biologist intent on discovering new species, on-site film processing lab, and a staff with expertise in underwater photography.
