Galleria dell' Accademia, Florence

Michelangelo's David

Many have an idea what to expect when they approach the Galleria dell'Accademia to spend some time viewing this masterpiece by Michelangelo, but rarely can they capture their feelings in words. I shall not try to here. I can only recommend that you will not be disappointed even if you must wait over an hour in line during the height of tourist season. Keep in mind, however, that this statue was commissioned when the artist was only 26 years old and just beginning to capture the attention of patrons of the arts in Florence. Jaw dropping beauty, one cannot help but linger. Cameras are discouraged, but sketchbooks are welcomed and you may take as long as you might wish to soak in the glory of David and other works by the master. Many hotel clerks will phone ahead for visitors to speed up the process in attaining tickets. Go early in the morning. Breakfast can wait.
