Don't miss the gardens!

If you’ve never been to Versailles before, the ornate palace is worth a tour. But leave plenty of time to explore the grounds, which were designed by Andre Le Notre. (Entry is free, except on Grandes Eaux Musicales days during the summer). We picked up some cheese, fruit, and a baguette at a nearby covered market, and tucked into a picnic while watching locals row on the pond beyond the landscaped gardens—it was the highlight of the day.
