Concierge.com's insider take:
This 185-acre green sprawl is often called the Central Park of Atlanta, and not just because of its size: Frederick Law Olmsted's sons, John and Frederick, Jr., consulted on the park's design and were no doubt influenced by their father's landscaped masterpiece. Situated in the heart of Midtown, Piedmont Park has playgrounds, fishing ponds, extensive jogging and bicycle paths, a tennis center, and playing fields that can be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis online. It also hosts many outdoor events, including the popular Atlanta Jazz Festival in May, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival in April (www.dogwood.org), and the Atlanta Pride Festival in June (www.atlantapride.org). The Atlanta Botanical Garden occupies 30 acres of Piedmont Park's spread and includes one of the world's largest permanent orchid displays and carnivorous-plant collections. A 53-acre expansion and restoration is scheduled to begin in fall 2007; some attractions may be temporarily closed (www.atlantabotanicalgarden.org; closed Mon).
